About one and a half kilometers from Rishikesh is a city located in the valley of Varunavrat, which we all know as Uttarkashi. Because of the Vishwanath temple, my first introduction from this city was made in childhood. But the real identity came in 2010 when I came to Madhya Pradesh to evaluate the project of Uttarakhand Tourism Directorate Veer Chandra Garhwali. It was a beautiful opportunity to travel and to understand the city, which I have taken a lot of advantage.

SPOTTING THE UTTARKASHI

Uttarkashi, situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi, is also a significant city with religious views. Here is the famous temple of Lord Vishwanath. The city is full of natural beauty. Here on one side where rivers flow between mountains, on the other side there is a thick forest on the hills. Here you can even enjoy the mountain climbing. Mountaineering can be done from Har-ke-Doon, Dodital, Yamunotri and Gomukh. If your courage is supporting you then the joy of visiting Uttarkashi doubles up.

SPOT FOR RELIGIOUS TOURISM

There is no shortage of temples in Uttarkashi. That’s why most people reach for religious tourism here. The ancient Vishwanath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that this temple was founded by Parashuramji and the MaharaniKanti had repaired the temple in 1857 AD. Maharani Kanti was the wife of Sudarshan Shah. A Shivalinga is installed in this temple. Tourists coming to Uttarkashi are sure to visit this temple.

SHAKTI MANDIR

If you ever visit Vishwanath temple, do not forget to visit Shakti Mandir. There is a Shakti temple on the right side of Vishwanath temple. This temple has a large trident with 6 meter high and 90-centimeter circumference. The upper part of the trident is of iron and the lower part is of copper. According to legends, goddess Durga (Shakt) killed the demons with this trident. Later this temple was established in the name of them.

MANERI

Maneri is situated at a distance of 14 kilometers from Uttarkashi. A dam has been built here on the river Bhagirathi, which is known as the ManeriBhali project, where electricity is produced.  Due to the dam, this place has become a tourist attraction. There are many small hill villages around Maneri like Jaamak, Kamar, Hina, Bhatsaur etc.

Few scenes of the film starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, “Kabhi Kabhi” was shot on this dam being built in Maneri in 1976. Tourists can enjoy nature in Maneri, which falls in the Gangotri’s halt of Char DhamYatra.
